Virgin Plastic is newly-manufactured plastic that has not been made into a product yet.

Samsung Electronics, a prominent electronics powerhouse, will stop the usage of virgin plastic packaging, yet is not discarding the harmful material fully.

The company stated with determination that virgin plastics will be “replaced with environmentally sustainable materials like recycled/bio-based paper. It has been confirmed that this bold replacement movement will begin during the first half of 2019.

Gyeong-bin Jeon, leader of the Samsung Global Customer Satisfaction Center, said “Samsung electronics is stepping up and showing initiative regarding our society’s environmental issues. We will make sure to adopt more environmentally sustainable materials even if it means an increase in the cost.

If this idealistic packaging change comes into reality, distinctive products will be influenced as well. Plastic trays used to hold products such as tablets will be replaced with pulp moulds, phone chargers will switch from glossy to matte finish, and plastic bags used for shipping appliances will use recycled resin or bioplastics.

In its latest sustainability report, Samsung uses approximately 35,300 tons of recycled plastics to make brand-new products. Being able to use 500,000 tones of recycled plastics and collecting 7.5 million tonnes of discarded products by 2030 are Samsung’s goals for the future.
